It's the fad from the 80s you never thought would see a revival, but hairdressers are reporting the mullet is back in vogue.

Hairstylist Brent Mattern loves the mullet so much, he cuts his own.

“I think it's fun. People sort of look at you and smile,” Mr Mattern, who owns Bespoke Hair in North Hobart, said.

“It's a bit 80s Aussie backyard, what mates do to each other — it's got that Aussie humour to it as well.”

Mr Mattern said he cuts about one mullet a week at his salon and believes its rise in popularity comes down to AFL players and popular music from the past.

“The mullet is sort of that underground, grungy haircut, but now it's come back through the market and it's become this big sort of fashionable thing again.”

Back in fashion or never left?

So what is it about the mullet that's so appealing to Australian males?

“I think a lot of these men that have mullets are trying to disrupt the status quo,” photographer Isabella Moore said.

Moore had an entire book published celebrating the iconic hairstyle after she was hired to photograph Mulletfest in New South Wales.

“I thought I'd landed on another planet,” she said of the annual festival.

“I reckon it's got to do with this Australian notion of being laid back and not taking yourself too seriously.

“It's such a peculiar hairstyle, it always draws attention.

“People are so fascinated with it as well because it's seen as this quintessential mark of Australian identity.”

As for whether or not the mullet was making a return to the mainstream, Ms Moore believes while it has come back into fashion, it also never really left.

“The men who have been wearing it since the 80s, I don't think they're the kind of blokes who care about fashion but because it's maintained that solidity, there has been a rise in the 'fashionable' mullet in the last five years,” she said.

Birth of an icon

While having a mullet today may be undeniably Australian, Moore said the style was adopted from America.

“When [Australians] were developing our own entertainment industry, it was easier to adopt an American influence, [and] because of that American influence in the 70s, American culture came to Australia,” she said.

She namechecked singer John Farnham, one of the mullet's most famous Australian wearers.

“He was quite famous and would have travelled and perhaps personified [the mullet] in an Australian way,” she said.

Alex Hunt, 28, has had his mullet “on and off” for around three years.

“It all started at a house party with a set of clippers and a few drinks, as all good things do,” he said.

As for why he caught the mullet: “I just d it, it seemed a good, honest haircut.”

Mr Hunt said his now signature look can be quite polarising as people either love it or hate it.

“It's quite a bogan sort of thing to have, but at the same time, it's entertaining — it's a conversation starter,” he said.

“Mum would never let me have one as a kid [and] it comes down to not having what I wanted as a kid. But I'm an adult now.”

Conversation starter

From being stopped at Bunnings to spotting a mullet across a crowded room, each mullet has its own tale to tell.

Caleb Overdijk, 19, explained the mullet brought people together and transcended class or social standing.

“When you go to a music gig or something that, and you see someone else with a mullet, you guys are automatically mates,” he said.

The dairy farmer used to have a man bun but decided to get a mullet after a relationship ended.

“You could say it was to get over the grief,” he laughed.

As for what the other farmers think of his hairstyle, he says they find it a bit funny.

“I reckon I would've expected [negative feedback] from the older generation, but a lot of older people really love it. I think it takes them back,” he said.

The Mullet that caught the PM's eye

Jarrad Cirkel had no idea the mullet he had been sporting for nearly a decade would cause such a stir, but after being snapped alongside Prime Minister Scott Morrison on the campaign trail, Mr Cirkel has become something of a local celebrity.

“The more the merrier, power to the mullet,” Mr Cirkel, from northern Tasmania, said when asked how he felt about so many younger men sporting the signature look.

The Bridgenorth Football Club player and TAFE teacher said his mullet was a “bit of a talking point” with his students who often had mullets themselves.

However, not everyone is a fan.

“My wife despises my mullet,” he said.

“The last haircut I had was the week before our wedding and she's hated it ever since and wants it gone.

“It's here for the meantime.”

Somerset authorities missed 14 chances to stop child abuse

12 Best Barber Shops in Adelaide - The Trend Spotter

Published: 18:55 BST, 2 November 2017 | Updated: 19:29 BST, 2 November 2017

A number of agencies failed to recognise and prevent the exploitation of at least nine teenagers in Somerset, it has been revealed.

The serious case review comes after two Turkish men were jailed last year for a total of 32 years after being convicted for rape and sexual offences against six children aged 14 and 15.

Authorities missed 14 opportunities to prevent the abuse of two of the teenagers, who sparked the initial review – who believed they were in a loving relationship with the men, legitimising the sustained abuse.

Both girls fell repeatedly pregnant and had a number of forced abortions and miscarriages, as well as being subject to physical and emotional abuse during a four-year period in Yeovil.

Jailed: Mehmet Citak (left) and Ahmet Kurtyemez (right) used their workplace, a barber's in Yeovil, Somerset, as a base to have sex with underage girls – and the offering of services such as piercing and tattoos attracted children to the shop. Two teenagers they abused fell repeatedly pregnant and had a number of forced abortions

Mehmet Citak, then aged 34, and Ahmet Kurtyemez, then aged 29, were sentenced to 20 years and 12 years imprisonment respectively for offences committed between 2010 and 2014.

Citak and Kurtyemez were using their workplace, a barber's, as a base to have sex with underage girls and the offering of services such as piercing and tattoos attracted children to the shop.

The two girls, known as C and Q, gave birth to children fathered by Citak and believed they were in long-term relationships with him but instead were 'subjected to physical, sexual and emotional abuse as part of a controlling relationship'.

The Somerset Safeguarding Children Board report found that 14 opportunities were missed by Avon and Somerset Police, the Clinical Commissioning Group, Yeovil District Hospital, Somerset Partnership Trust (CAMHS), and Somerset County Council.

The report highlights a number of failings in the care of the two girls involved in the case: 'What is surprising though is that even when the age difference of the sexual partner was known by police and social care to be 10+ years, no action was taken purely on this basis.

What is surprising though is that even when the age difference of the sexual partner was known by police and social care to be 10+ years, no action was taken purely on this basis

'Moreover, when the girls lied and gave ages variously three to seven years old, this was accepted without reporting concern.'

Frances Nicholson, Cabinet member for Children and Families at Somerset County Council said: 'This report makes very difficult reading and will bring home the uncomfortable truth that this form of child abuse – all other forms – takes place everywhere, including Somerset.

'It is clear that all the agencies had lessons to learn and that the system as a whole did not respond well enough to protect and support these young people.

'The report covers a period several years ago and this issue is now much better understood and considerable improvements have been made in the way agencies respond together.'

Julian Wooster, the Director of Children's Services for Somerset County Council apologised for the shocking failings.

There were 14 different chances to identify and stop the abuse – but all agencies missed them.

Mr Wooster says a number of people who failed the system no longer work for the council.

The lack of safeguarding around tattoo and piercing parlours, which frequently attract children, is of major concern, an independent inquiry has found. File photo

The lack of safeguarding arrangements around tattoo and piercing parlours, which frequently attract children, is of major concern, an independent inquiry has found.

Licensing and registration of such premises should not just focus on health and safety but also consider measures to prevent children falling victim to sexual exploitation, according to the serious case review.

Report author Edi Carmi wrote: 'Given the current fashion for both piercing and tattoos, children are ly to be attracted to premises where these are done.

'Given the potential vulnerability of the individual subject to such procedures, especially in relation to genital and nipple piercing, the lack of safeguarding arrangements around such premises is of major concern.

'On looking into arrangements for piercing, the review team were surprised to learn that arrangements for registration focus on health and safety issues, but there are no criteria about the training of either piercing or tattooing practitioners, and that the safeguarding of children does not feature in the registration process.

'It is not known to what extent there are concerns about safeguarding in piercing and tattooing premises, but given the underlying lack of standards relating to safeguarding in the registration process and the lack of subsequent inspections, this is not surprising.'

The report identified some shortcomings in the early stages of the police investigation in Somerset but also highlighted its successes once fully under way. It praised how officers learned from colleagues working on Operation Brooke in Bristol, another child sexual exploitation investigation which led to the jailing of 13 men.

Earlier this year, Ofsted said the county council's children's services department was making 'satisfactory progress' since an inadequate inspection rating in 2015.

Detective Superintendent Will White, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: 'The serious case review recognises the lessons we learnt from Operation Brooke and how we sought to implement this learning in our approach to the exploitation that was happening in Yeovil.

'We're now much better at spotting the links, joining up the intelligence and, alongside our partners, seeing a fuller picture, but we're by no means complacent.'

Boys Club Barbershop is about a great haircut and a cold drink in a familiar environment and that’s that. And by “familiar” we mean a place that feels your best mate’s apartment. But don’t let that deter you because waiting for a cut at Boys Club is basically hanging out with your mates, a favourite male pastime if there ever was one.
